No. 5 Broncos Down Warriors in Three Sets, Win 13th Straight
TURLOCK, Calif. – The Broncos remained perfect in the CCAA standings, sweeping Stanislaus State on Friday night to improve to 11-0 in conference play and 17-1 overall. It was already their 12th sweep of the season, closing in on their school record of 15 sweeps set just last season. With the loss, the Warriors fall to 13-6 overall and are tied for fourth place in the conference.
Since the start of CCAA play on September 20th, the Broncos are an unfathomable 33-3 in sets won with eight sweeps. The last time they lost a set came three weeks ago on October 5th at Sonoma State. Furthermore, they have also swept the second, third, and fourth place teams in the conference standings.
Cal Poly Pomona stuck to their winning formula by feeding the ball to their big hitters in Charlotte Koerber, Sarah Ybarra, and Samantha Campion – each racking up double-digit kills in the win over the Warriors. Ybarra and Campion once again turned in double-double performances with double-digit digs. Setter Caitie Mueller added 37 assists to her career total, marking an even 2,800 during her time donning the Green & Gold.
Avery Percival contributed 10 digs on defense, bringing her CPP total to 1,053. She is now just 31 away from taking sole possession of 6th place all-time in Bronco history. Middle blockers Alexia Athans and Helen McMullin teamed up at the net for 10 of the Broncos' 20 blocks in the match, as the duo has been involved with over 82 percent of the team's blocks this season.
Despite a third-set scare, the Broncos pulled through in the end for a 25-22 win to secure the sweep. This came after 25-19 and 25-15 wins in sets one and two, marking the 13th straight win for CPP – the third-longest winning streak in program history.
