Broncos Become First Team to Clinch CCAA Tournament Berth
CHICO, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona volleyball became the first team in the CCAA to clinch a berth into the conference tournament next month, after continuing their perfect 12-0 start in conference play. They improve to 18-1 overall on the season, while tying the second-longest winning streak in program history at 14 games.
The CCAA tournament will be held at Kellogg Arena on the campus of Cal Poly Pomona from November 21st-23rd, as the Broncos had already received the bid to host the event before the start of the season. This will be the first time the tournament has ever been hosted at CPP since its inception in 2015, and the sixth time the Broncos have made an appearance overall. The Green & Gold look to hoist another trophy after claiming the tournament title in 2022.
The No. 5 ranked Broncos earned their 13th sweep of the season on Saturday afternoon, taking down Chico State in three sets for their sixth consecutive sweep. They are now just two sweeps shy of tying the program record for most in a season at 15, which was set just last season. Cal Poly Pomona also had their greatest point-differential in a set this season, outscoring Chico State 25-6 in the second set of the match.
Samantha Campion has shined as of late, collecting 10 or more kills in each of the past five matches. In the four matches since October 18th, Campion has a red-hot attack percentage of .436 in 94 attempts, landing 45 kills (3.75 per set) with just four attack errors. The senior out of Mission Viejo has also collected double-digit digs in eight consecutive matches, leading the team with 235 (3.67 per set) on the season.
The team as a whole had one of their most efficient nights on offense, swinging at a .375 clip compared to Chico State's .057, marking the Broncos' fourth-best of the season. This was also accompanied by a season-low seven attack errors. The Broncos did well at the net with 12 total blocks, compared to the Wildcat's three. Sophomore Alexia Athans led the team with two solo and three assisted blocks, extending her team-leading totals in both categories.
