A Decade of Winning, CPP Athletics Celebrates 10-Year Anniversary of Iconic Rebrand
By: Alex Kline, Assistant Athletics Director for Communications
POMONA, Calif. – On September 24, 2014, the Cal Poly Pomona Department of Intercollegiate Athletics revealed its new visual identity, including a new primary logo, secondary logo, font, and website to refresh the department's brand image. In the decade since CPP donned its new spirit mark, the athletics department has done one thing – win.
The new brand was revealed during a 2014 Welcome Week Spirit Rally in Kellogg Gym (now Kellogg Arena), where CPP students and athletes gathered to listen to university officials and coaches speak on the tradition and success of athletics. The new logo was then revealed at center court in front of a packed gym, followed by the Bronco pep band leading all those in attendance in a spirited chant. See the gallery below for photos of the event.
Then University President, Dr. J. Michael Ortiz, said at the time, "I'm excited to unveil a new look for Bronco Athletics – one that is bold, modern and magnificent. The new athletics logo will help represent all Broncos of the past, present, and future."
The Broncos have certainly represented the new logo well.
In the 1,594 games played since the rebrand, the Broncos own an overall record of 984-560-50, good for a .633 department winning percentage. This also includes an exact .700-winning percentage in home contests held at Kellogg Arena, Kellogg Stadium, and Scolinos Field.
In 2014-15, the first year of the new brand's existence, Cal Poly Pomona won its first and only Robert J. Hiegert Commissioner's Cup, which is awarded to the CCAA institution with the best overall athletics performance in a given academic year. The department went an incredible 138-50-3 (.730) that year, while also owning a staggering 65-16-2 (.795) record in home contests. The Green & Gold have finished in the top three of the Commissioner's Cup every single year since 2014, including three runner-up finishes – most recently as 2023-24.
Of the six sports that record wins, losses, and ties – that being baseball, men's basketball, men's soccer, women's basketball, women's soccer, and volleyball – all six have winning records since the rebrand. Furthermore, five of the six sports have winning percentages above .600, while men's soccer leads the way with a remarkable .735 winning percentage in the past decade. In the 54 collective seasons across all sports over the past 10 years, CPP has a winning record in 44 of those seasons. Baseball and men's soccer have each posted above .500 records in all nine of their seasons since the rebrand.
One individual national title has been won under the new brand, men's track and field's Justin Ellerbee in pole vault in the spring of 2015. Multiple teams have knocked on the door of a national championship in that period as well, seeing Final Four finishes from baseball in 2015 and 2016, and men's soccer in 2015, 2017, and 2018.
In total, the Broncos have 62 NCAA Tournament appearances over the past 10 years, collectively averaging just over six per year. This means on average, more than half of the department's programs make their respective NCAA Tournament every year.
A plethora of individual awards have been won under the new identity, highlighted by 100 All-Americans since 2014. Cal Poly Pomona has dominated at the conference level as well, seeing 33 CCAA Players of the Year and 11 CCAA Coaches of the Year. In addition, the Broncos have claimed 206 CCAA Athlete of the Week honors under the new spirit mark, 23 more than any other school in the conference over the past decade.
