No. 17 Broncos Fight Back for Home Draw and Stay in First-Place Tie Past Midway Mark of CCAA Slate

POMONA, Calif. - The No. 17 Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team answered a first-half goal with a late Jakob Singh strike and drew versus Cal State Dominguez Hills, 1-1, in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action on Sunday afternoon at Kellogg Stadium.

The result leaves CPP at 8-1-4 overall, 3-0-3 in the CCAA and 5-0-2 at home. The Broncos' unbeaten streak thus stretches to 11 games at 7-0-4, eclipsing last season's longest of 10 (7-0-3) to begin the year. This now marks the program's longest such run since a 12-gamer (10-0-2) from Sept. 15 to Oct. 31, 2021.

Cal State Dominguez Hills moves to 5-4-4 overall and 2-0-4 in league play. The Toros have an undefeated stretch going themselves of 2-0-4 over their last six, all to open the conference slate.

Sunday began with Cal Poly Pomona and No. 2 Cal State LA in a two-way tie for first in the conference table, and ended that way as well as both sides played to 1-1 draws.

The lone goal of the first half came at the 29:09 mark through fifth-year senior CSUDH midfielder Logan Kaufman, unassisted to the bottom right for his third this season and fourth of his collegiate career.

Cal Poly Pomona played the final 35:05 of the contest a man up after the Toros' sophomore defender Diego Barahona was shown a red card.

The Broncos threatened consistently and finally took advantage of the situation at 74:48 as Singh, a true junior forward, hit a shot low to the center of the net for his third goal of 2024. The Buena Park product was starting his career-best third match in succession and registered his ninth career score. Fifth-year senior tri-captain Jasper Winslow was credited with his second assist this season and fourth of his college days.

Drawing his first collegiate start in the absence of fourth-year junior goalkeeper Luke Garciduenas, Cody Lindeman provided a trio of saves. The redshirt freshman spent the 2023 season at NCAA Division I University of San Diego. Graduate student Arturo Magaña had four first-half stops in the Toro net, all within a span of 108 seconds.

The physical battle between area rivals featured seven combined yellow cards, with four to the home side, in addition to the Toro ejection.

CPP held a significant shot advantage over CSUDH at the end of the 90 minutes, of 23-4, including 12-1 following the red card. The Broncos fell two attempts shy of equaling their season high, while reaching the 20-shot mark for the fifth time this campaign.

Toro senior forward Mikey McKibbin, the reigning CCAA Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season and the league leader in total points with 26 from nine goals and eight assists, managed two shots, sharing the match high of two shots on goal with Singh. Singh and Winslow paced all players with four efforts apiece.
