Ryan Fields Advances to Olympic Trial Semifinals

By: Alex Kline, Assistant Athletics Director for Communications

EUGENE, OregonRyan Fields ran 50.50 seconds in the 400 meter hurdles on Thursday night, placing 12th out of 32 hurdlers in the first round of the U.S. Olympic Trials.

The top five finishers in each of the five heats, as well as the next two fastest remaining, advanced out of the first round and into the semifinals. Having placed third in his heat, Fields earned an automatic qualifier into the semis, which will take place tomorrow night at approximately 6:16 PM.

Fields time' was the fifth-fastest among all college athletes in the race, and half a second faster than the next closest Division II athlete. Last month, Fields ran a 49.96 seconds in the 400 meter hurdles at the Franson Last Chance meet, a time that would've ranked fifth overall on Thursday night.

The semifinals will feature 27 athletes competing across three heats. The top two in each heat, and the next three fastest remaining, will advance to the finals this Sunday, June 30th. If Fields performs at his full potential tomorrow night, he could find himself on the short list of athletes competing for a spot in Paris.
