Broncos Fall Short in Tight Contest with Toros

POMONA, Calif. – The No. 17 Cal Poly Pomona Broncos battled fiercely but ultimately fell to the No. 5 Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros, 65-61, in a tightly contested match up that saw both teams trading leads throughout the game.

The Broncos came out strong, taking an early lead just over a minute into the game. The Toros, however, responded quickly, trailing until the 1:19 mark of the first quarter, when the score was tied at 13-13. Despite the Toros' push late in the first, the Broncos managed to hold on to a 15-13 lead as the quarter ended.

In the second quarter, the Broncos maintained the lead for the first three minutes before the Toros slowly built a 10-point advantage. After a timeout, the Broncos regrouped and mounted a strong comeback, cutting the lead down to just one point with four minutes left. However, the Toros held on and won the quarter 23-19, heading into halftime with a narrow 36-34 lead.

The third quarter saw a quick equalizer from the Broncos as they tied the game at 14 seconds in. The teams then exchanged baskets for the remainder of the period, with the Toros finishing strong and pushing ahead to a 50-47 lead. The Toros outscored the Broncos 14-13 in the third, maintaining a slight edge.

The Broncos entered the fourth quarter determined to push for the win, and with 6:28 left, they managed to tie the game again at 54-54. With three minutes left, the Broncos took a 59-58 lead, but the Toros quickly regained their momentum and closed out the game with a 65-61 victory, outscoring the Broncos 15-14 in the final quarter.

Cookie Marques led the Broncos with 17 points, while Mydrea Moore contributed 14 points and 11 rebounds. Breanne Ha added 13 points, and Sydney Nelson chipped in with 10. Kalaya Buggs had a strong presence on the boards, grabbing nine rebounds.
