By: Alex Kline, Assistant Athletics Director for Communications
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona women's cross country team dominated their season opener on Saturday morning, finishing first in the Coyote Challenge on the campus of Cal State San Bernardino.
A staggering nine Broncos finished in the Top 15 of the race, not even including Lizeth DePaz, who ran unattached and finished ninth. Sophomore Jade Kingston took home the individual title with a time of 18:24.1, averaging 5:55.3 minutes per mile. That was the first individual title for CPP since Lorraine Fernandez won the Kim Duyst Invitational in 2017, and just the fifth time in program history a Bronco has claimed an individual title.
Six of the next seven finishers also donned the Green & Gold, including Arissa Hatcher (3rd), Miranda Palacios (4th), Vivian Martinez (5th), Paige Moore (6th), Chloe Alchin (7th), and Bridget Edwards (8th). Freshman Galilea Jimenez and junior Julia Butler rounded out the Top 15 for CPP, finishing in 14th and 15th place, respectively.
The team finished with a final score of 19, the second-lowest score in a race in program history. Cal Poly Pomona's average time was 18:39, over 40 seconds faster than the next closest school.
