Big Fourth Quarter Leads No. 19 Broncos to First Win
AZUSA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team picked up their first win of the season on Saturday night, defeating Point Loma by a score of 71-66. After trailing 30-26 at the end of the first half, the Broncos kicked it into high gear with 45 points in the second half to come back for the victory. CPP has now won five of their past six meetings with Point Loma dating back to 2018.
Jeanette Fine led the team in scoring, racking up 19 points while going 6-for-13 from the field and 6-for-8 from the charity stripe. Fine and Khamiyah Anderson also led the Broncos with seven boards a piece in the game, despite the Broncos being outrebounded 38 to 31.
Cookie Marques and Breanne Ha also scored double-digits in the game, Marques leading the team with three treys and 13 points while Ha had 12 points and two made beyond the arc. After breaking the CPP single-season three-point record last year with 73, Ha now sets her sights on the all-time three-point record. She needs just 43 more to pass Anna James (1999-03) to break the school record of 215. Ha already ranks second all-time at 173.
With the Broncos trailing 50-47 entering the fourth, the team battled to keep the game close in the first five minutes of the final quarter. With 4:44 left on the clock, CPP still saw themselves down 59-58. A good jumper by Fine at 4:18 would then give the Broncos their first lead since the first quarter. The senior would go on to make seven of the next nine points for CPP, via two layups and three free throws, extending their lead to 69-66. With 10 seconds on the clock, Kalaya Buggs nailed two more free throws to lock down the 71-66 victory.
The Broncos' 24 points in the fourth quarter was their most in a quarter since the CCAA Tournament semifinal game last season.
