10th-Ranked Broncos Edged by Point Loma in Battle of West Region Contenders
CHULA VISTA, Calif. - Tenth-ranked Cal Poly Pomona allowed a 65th-minute goal and fell to Point Loma Nazarene University, 1-0, in non-conference men's soccer action at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center on Saturday evening.
With the defeat, CPP is an even 1-1 on the young season. The Broncos are favored to finish the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) race in second this year. Reigning Pacific West Conference (PacWest) champion and preseason favorite Point Loma improves to 1-0-1. The Sea Lions are among several teams receiving votes just outside of the United Soccer Coaches preseason top-25 poll.
The lone goal of the contest came at the 64:46 mark, courtesy of fifth-year senior forward Austin Lavell. The product of Trabuco Canyon now has seven goals and three game-winners for his college career. Sophomore newcomer Emmett Layman received a pass on the counterattack, beat a defender while entering the penalty area on the left side, and provided a cross on the ground that Lavell punched in from six yards. He was credited with the assist for his first Point Loma point.
Fourth-year junior Bronco goalkeeper Luke Garciduenas wound up with four saves, the first coming just 127 seconds into the match to deny Simon Sagal. Graduate student Reinier ter Riet, a first-year Sea Lion out of Sonoma State and a native of the Netherlands, had several tough ones among five stops in picking up his first clean sheet for his new club.
CPP held a shot edge on the evening of 12-10, including 8-4 after the halftime interval and 6-1 following the Lavell strike, but could not find the equalizer.
The only change to CPP's starting lineup from Thursday's opener in La Mirada was Noah Ko in place of Mauro Rafael. It marked a college debut for Ko, a true freshman out of Chino and Chino Hills High School. Senior Eric Pearce made his first appearance of 2024 off the bench.
