Kalaya Buggs Named CCAA Player of the Week

Cal Poly Pomona's Kalaya Buggs has been voted the FloCollege/CCAA Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 6-12.

Buggs led the No. 21 Broncos to two critical road wins as Cal Poly Pomona stayed just one game back of first place. The senior guard averaged 19.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 5.0 assists in the victories. She also shot .458 percent from the field and went 14-of-15 from the free throw line. 

In Thursday's win over Chico State, which came into the game undefeated in conference play, Buggs scored 22 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and had five assists in a 90-84 overtime win. She scored eight of the Broncos' 10 points in overtime, including going 4-for-4 from the free throw line and grabbing three rebounds. 

Buggs followed up on Saturday with a 17-point, six-rebound, five-assist performance against Cal Poly Humboldt. She went 5-of-11 from the field and 5-of-5 at the free throw line. She added two 3-pointers, a steal and a block. 

The Compton, Calif., native is now averaging 10.7 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. She leads the CCAA with a .862 free throw percentage and is fourth in assists-to-turnover ratio (1.30). Click here to see CCAA Statistics Leaders.
