Late Surge Pushes Cal State LA Past Broncos
POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona Broncos dropped a hard-fought contest to the Cal State LA Golden Eagles, 67-58, in a CCAA conference showdown. Despite a strong start, the Broncos couldn't overcome a late surge from the Golden Eagles and ultimately fell short.
The game began on a positive note for the Broncos, who held a slim lead for the first seven minutes of the first half. The Golden Eagles quickly closed the gap, inching ahead as the first half progressed. With 10 minutes remaining, Cal Poly Pomona trailed by only a few points, but a series of missed shots allowed Cal State LA to build an eight-point advantage with under five minutes on the clock.
Undeterred, the Broncos pushed back and were able to narrow the deficit. With just over a minute left, the game was tied at 25-all. In the final seconds of the first half, Demarreya Lewis-Cooper knocked down a clutch three-pointer, giving the Broncos a 28-26 lead going into halftime.
However, the Golden Eagles came out strong in the second half, quickly reclaiming the lead with a three-pointer and continued to build momentum. The Broncos fought to stay within striking distance, but Cal State LA extended their lead to 10 points with eight minutes left in the game.
As the clock ticked down, the Golden Eagles continued to press, widening the gap to 19 points with just four minutes remaining. Despite a late push by the Broncos, which included a few additional baskets, Cal State LA held on for the 67-58 victory.
The game saw contributions from 12 different Broncos, with Shyheim Parm and Jaden Winfield leading the way with 10 points apiece.
