Late Rally is Not Enough as Broncos Lose to Otters, 76-65
POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona Broncos were defeated by the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters, 76-65. The Otters quickly took control, and the Broncos found themselves trailing throughout the game.
For the first seven minutes of the opening half, the Broncos were able to keep the deficit within 10 points, but the Otters' offense began to take over. As the first half wound down, Cal State Monterey Bay extended their lead to 20 points with just four minutes remaining. By the break, the Otters held a commanding 52-27 lead.
Despite the large gap, the Broncos came out in the second half, knowing they had work to do. Key performances began to emerge. Jaden Winfield led the Broncos with 14 points and 5 rebounds, consistently finding ways to score despite the tough circumstances. Winfield's efforts, especially in the second half, helped spark a 15-point run with 10 minutes left in the game. This run brought the Broncos back into the contest and energized the team. Miles Lewis, who finished with 10 points, also contributed crucial baskets during this stretch.
With five minutes remaining, the Broncos had narrowed the lead to just 12 points. They continued to fight, benefiting from a few key turnovers and crucial rebounds. Michael Ofoegbu, who led the team with seven rebounds, played a pivotal role in limiting the Otters' second-chance opportunities and keeping the Broncos within striking distance. Ofoegbu's hustle on the boards was instrumental in creating additional scoring chances.
With just 1:40 left in the game, the Broncos had pulled within nine points of the Otters, and it appeared the game could go down to the wire. However, despite their late push, the Broncos couldn't complete the comeback, and the game ended with a 76-65 victory for Monterey Bay.
