Senior Day Win, No. 20 Broncos Score 87 Against Pioneers
POMONA, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball delivered a dominant performance in their final home game of the regular season on Saturday afternoon, overwhelming Cal State East Bay with an 87-51 victory in Kellogg Arena. The win improved the Broncos' record to 22-4 overall and 17-3 in CCAA play, as they remain two games ahead of Chico State and two behind Cal State Dominguez Hills in the conference standings.
Before the game, the Broncos honored four seniors - Skylar Dillon, Cookie Marques, Kalaya Buggs, Breanne Ha – for their contributions to the program.
From the opening tip, Cal Poly Pomona imposed their will on both ends of the floor. The Broncos set the tone early with a blistering first quarter, outscoring the Pioneers 24-11. Their offensive execution was sharp, knocking down 62.5% of their field goals and an impressive 57.1% from beyond the arc in the opening period.
Mydrea Moore led the scoring efforts, scoring a career-high 23 points while also recording 14 rebounds for a double-double, her second in the past three games.
Coming out of half, the Broncos showed no signs of slowing down. Kalaya Buggs orchestrated the offense efficiently, contributing 14 points, four assists, and two steals while providing relentless pressure on the defensive end. Fellow senior Breanne Ha nailed four treys from deep, adding to her record-breaking career total. The Rancho Cucamonga native now has 66 three's on the season, and is just seven away from tying her own school record for most in a season (73 last season).
The Broncos' bench also played a key role, with Cookie Marques and Brielle Minor combining for 22 points to keep the energy high throughout the game. Marques, who previously spent time at Stanislaus State, Iowa Western, and Folsom Lake Community College, reached her 1,000th career point against on Saturday, needing just 12 entering the game and making 13 points.
The fourth quarter saw Cal Poly Pomona put the game completely out of reach with a dominant 25-point output. Their defensive intensity forced Cal State East Bay into 25 turnovers, leading to 36 points off those miscues. The Broncos' ability to convert defense into offense was a defining factor in the blowout win.
