Women’s Basketball Ties Highest Win Total Since 2019 With Victory Over Cougars
POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team captured their 20th win of the season on Saturday afternoon with a 62-55 victory over Cal State San Marcos, improving to 20-4 on the season and 15-3 in conference play. Their 20 wins ties last year's total, and is tied for the program's most since the 2018-19 season.
The Broncos set the tone early, jumping to a 16-7 lead in the first quarter, powered by efficient shooting and a solid defensive presence. Sydney Nelson once again led the Broncos in the win, tallying 23 points on 10-of-13 shooting, along with five rebounds and three steals. Mydrea Moore dominated the boards with a game-high 10 rebounds, while also contributing 12 points for her second career double-double.
Cal Poly Pomona's momentum carried into the second quarter, where they outscored San Marcos 24-16, shooting an impressive 64.7% from the field. Breanne Ha chipped in eight points, making the Broncos only two three's to extend the lead. Despite a third-quarter slump where they managed only eight points, the Broncos' earlier production provided a cushion to weather the storm.
San Marcos fought back in the second half, but the Cougars' comeback fell short as Pomona's defense tightened in the final minutes. The Broncos out-rebounded the Cougars 36-28 and capitalized on points in the paint, scoring 32 compared to San Marcos' 22. Despite 17 turnovers, Pomona's shooting efficiency — finishing at 51% — proved too much for CSUSM to overcome.
With this win, Cal Poly Pomona improves to 15-3 in the CCAA standings. Third place Chico State lost on Saturday, once again giving the Broncos a two-game cushion ahead of the Wildcats for second place. Cal State Dominguez Hills remains undefeated at 26-0 and has secured a first round bye in the upcoming CCAA Tournament.
