Ha Passes 1K Career Points Against Undefeated Toros
CARSON, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team put up a strong fight against an undefeated Cal State Dominguez Hills squad on Saturday afternoon, but ultimately fell 78-68 to the No. 3 ranked team in the nation. With the loss, the Broncos fall to 18-4 on the season, while the Toros became the first team in the CCAA to clinch a berth into the conference tournament. Additionally, the Broncos hold on to a one game lead over Chico State for second place in the CCAA standings.
Senior Breanne Ha reached yet another career milestone on Saturday, scoring her 1,000th collegiate point. She becomes the 27th player in program history to surpass the 1,000-point mark, with all one thousand coming while wearing the Green & Gold. The most recent player to accomplish this feat was Jordyn Shane with 1,072 points from 2015-19.
The No. 22 ranked Broncos struggled to find their rhythm early, managing just five points in the first quarter while the Toros took control with a 14-5 lead. However, a second-quarter resurgence saw the Broncos outscore the Toros 23-13 on 60 percent shooting from the floor, heading into halftime with a narrow 28-27 lead.
Sydney Nelson led the charge for Cal Poly Pomona once again, finishing with 24 points and seven rebounds while shooting an efficient 7-for-15 from the field and 10-for-12 from the free-throw line. Nelson is coming off a career game where she carried the Broncos to the win against Cal State LA behind a 34-point performance. On the week, Nelson is averaging 29.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game.
Brielle Minor added 16 points off the bench, while Khamiyah Anderson contributed eight points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Despite the Broncos' first-half comeback, Cal State Dominguez Hills dominated the third quarter, outscoring CPP 25-4, fueled by a suffocating defense that forced eight turnovers. The Toros extended their lead to as many as 23 before the Broncos mounted a comeback attempt in the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Cal Poly Pomona found its offensive rhythm again, pouring in 36 points and shooting 55.6% from the field and going 14-for-17 from the charity stripe. However, the deficit proved too large to overcome as the Toros maintained their composure down the stretch for their 24th consecutive win of the season. CSUDH is one of five teams remaining in the entire NCAA (all divisions) with a perfect record, the others being UCLA (D1), NYU (D3), Bowdoin (D3), and Scranton (D3).
