Ha Leads Broncos to Ninth Straight Win in Home Opener
POMONA, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona senior Breanne Ha scored a season-high 22 points in Saturday's home opener, leading the No. 23 ranked Broncos to their ninth consecutive win with a 60-50 victory over Cal State San Bernardino. The Broncos remain perfect in conference play at 4-0, while improving to 9-1 overall on the season for their best start in over a decade.
After leading the team with 18 points in the win over No. 3 Montana State Billings on Tuesday, Ha followed that up with a season-high with 22 points against the Coyotes. An impressive 15 of Ha's 22 points game via the three-ball, while also going 5-for-6 from the free throw line. The senior from Rancho Cucamonga is now just 20 three-point field goals away from tying the all-time school record, and 21 away from breaking it.
To no surprise, Sydney Nelson reached double figures in the scoresheet for her eighth consecutive game, going 3-for-6 from the field and 5-for-6 from the charity stripe for a total of 11 points, all while playing the entire 40 minutes. Nelson ranks eighth in the CCAA in scoring this season, averaging 14.3 points per game, while also ranking third in field goal percentage at .536 on the year.
Sophomore Mydrea Moore set a career-high in rebounds at 11, with 10 of those coming on the defensive end. Moore currently leads the team with 58 on the season, ranking Top 15 in the conference averaging 5.8 total per game.
The Broncos took the lead on a made three from Ha late in the first quarter, and never relinquished it for the remainder of the game. Despite CPP maintaining the lead, the Coyotes continued to apply pressure for the remainder of the first half, bringing it all the way back within one point at 24-23.
Cal Poly Pomona slowly gained some separation in the third quarter, outscoring CSUSB 6-0 on points off turnovers to go up by as much as 10. The Broncos matched the Coyotes' efforts in the final quarter, maintaining separation on two more treys from Ha, and seven second-chance points to the Yotes' one, ultimately winning by a final score for 60-50.
The team as a whole shot incredibly well from the line, going 22-for-31 for their most made free throws of the season. Despite not controlling points inside the paint, which had become a theme for the team in recent wins, the Broncos found other avenues to score – resulting in their ninth consecutive win.
