By: Alex Kline, Assistant Athletics Director for Communications
INDIANAPOLIS – For the 20th time in program history, Cal Poly Pomona volleyball is headed to the NCAA Tournament. During Monday's selection show, it was announced that the Broncos would be the No. 1 seed in the West Region, earning the right to host the regionals on their home court in Kellogg Arena.
"I am beyond thrilled and honored to lead Cal Poly Pomona as we host the NCAA Volleyball Regionals," said head coach Traci Dahl. "This is a tremendous opportunity for our team, our university, and our fans to experience the intensity and excitement of postseason competition on our home court. We are ready to bring our best and create unforgettable moments together with our incredible community."
The eight-team regional will be hosted on the campus of Cal Poly Pomona for the first time since 1992. Games will begin on Thursday, December 5th, and run through Saturday, December 7th. The winner of the regional will advance to the Elite Eight in Sioux Falls, South Dakota to compete for a national title. Two of the last four national champions have come from the CCAA.
As the No. 1 seed, the Broncos will face No. 8 seed Simon Fraser on December 5th, at 1:30 PM. It will be only their fourth NCAA Tournament game on their home court, having hosted two games in 1984 and one in 1992. The Broncos are 1-0 against Simon Fraser this season, having swept them in three sets back on September 13th. That win launched the Broncos' incredible 18-game winning streak, which lasted over two months until November 14th. If the Broncos win, they'll play on Friday at 4:00 PM in the semifinals. Should they make the regional final, that would be played on Saturday at 5:00 PM.
The top-seeded Broncos look to continue their historic run, owning an overall record of 23-3 while winning the outright CCAA regular season title with a 17-1 conference record. This year, they have also broken the program record for most CCAA wins in a season, most 3-0 sweeps in a season, and the second-longest winning streak at 18 consecutive victories. Now, the team sets their sights on the first regional title in program history.
