LEXINGTON, KY. - The trio of Samantha Campion, Caitie Mueller, and Sarah Ybarra added more accolades to their resumes, each being named to the 2024 AVCA All-America Second Team. The three honorees ties a program record for most All-Americans in a season, having just set that record last season. Campion and Mueller earn All-America honors for the second and third time in their careers, respectively, while Ybarra earns the recognition for the first time.
Caitie Mueller earned All-America honors for the third time in her career, after being named an AVCA Honorable Mention in both 2022 and 2023. The senior from San Clemente will go down as one of the very best setters in school history, ranking third all-time in assists (3,239) and second in assists per set (10.32). She is the only player in the top five in school history to have played just three seasons at Cal Poly Pomona, while everyone else played four. Now a three-time All-American, Mueller is also a three-time All-West Region honoree and three-time All-CCAA honoree. Mueller is tied for the second-most CCAA Athlete of the Week awards in conference history across all sports with 11, trailing only Ryan Fields (a recent CPP track & field athlete) at 15. This season, the senior setter ranked 23rd in the nation in assists per set (10.53) and 44th in total assists (1,064).
Samantha Campion accumulated nearly every award possible this season, being named D2CCA West Region Player of the Year, AVCA and D2CCA All-West Region First Team, CCAA Player of the Year, All-CCAA First Team, and two-time CCAA Defensive Player of the Week. Now, she is a two-time All-American, being named AVCA Second Team and D2CCA Third Team this year, in addition to receiving AVCA Third Team honors last season. Campion was arguably the most dynamic player in the entire country in 2024, ranking Top 200 in the nation in aces per set (0.49), attacks per set (9.39), digs per set (3.62), kills per set (3.20), points per set (4.04), service aces (49), total attacks (948), and total kills (323). Campion finished with 1,067 digs and 957 kills in her CPP career, coming just 43 kills short of becoming the first player in school history to reach 1,000 in each statistical category.
Sophomore Sarah Ybarra had a breakout season for the Green & Gold, starting off with a bang by earning National Player of the Week honors during opening week in September. Ybarra continued that production throughout the entire season, averaging 4.00 kills per set and 3.24 digs per set while playing in all 101 sets and starting in all 29 matches. Ybarra led the team with 404 kills, ranking second-most in school history in the 25-point scoring format. Additionally, her 4.00 kills per set on the season ranks eighth all-time in program history and second during the 25-point scoring format. For this breakout campaign, Ybarra was rewarded with All-CCAA First Team, AVCA All-West Region First Team, and now AVCA All-America Second Team honors. The La Habra native becomes the 16th CPP volleyball athlete to earn All-America honors.
