Baseball Ranked No. 3 in First Regional Rankings
By: Alex Kline, Assistant Athletics Director for Communications
INDIANAPOLIS – The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team was ranked No. 3 in the first NCAA Division II West Region Rankings on Wednesday.
The Broncos currently sit in second place in the CCAA standings with a 24-12 conference record and a 28-17 overall record – though they are tied with San Marcos in winning percentage.
There are four other CCAA schools appearing in the regional rankings, including Cal State Monterey Bay at No. 2, Cal State San Marcos at No. 4, San Francisco State at No. 6, and Chico State at No. 8. The CCAA has historically dominated the west region in baseball, as a CCAA school has won the west region title in 18 of the past 21 tournaments. Surprisingly, a west region school has not won the national title since St. Mary's (TX) did so in 2001.
The Broncos made back-to-back College World Series appearances in 2015 and 2016, finishing in the national semifinals both times. They have a total of 15 NCAA Tournament appearances, including three national titles in 1976, 1980, and 1983. Their three titles is the third-most in NCAA DII history.
The field of 56 teams will be announced during NCAA Selection Show on Sunday, May 12th, at 7:00 PM PST on NCAA.com. The west region will feature six teams broken up into two three-team regionals (Seeds 1/4/5 playing in one regional and 2/3/6 playing in another). As it stands now, the Broncos would be traveling to Monterey Bay for the second straight year. However, the current seeding could very quickly change with the results of the upcoming CCAA Tournament.
