  • Cal Poly Pomona is Among the Best Helping Students Earn Degrees in Physics
The American Physics Society found that Cal Poly Pomona is among the best at helping students earn bachelor’s degrees in physics. The university tied for fifth with the U.S. Naval Academy in the number of degrees awarded from 2015-2017. Cal Poly Pomona also came in second, just behind Morehouse College, in physics degrees awarded to under-represented minority (URM) students. Highly-qualified faculty and a range of opportunities for students and faculty to interact outside of class are what make the physics and astronomy program special at Cal Poly Pomona, says Hector Mireles, professor and chair of the Physics and Astronomy Department. Physics and astronomy majors learn the principles of …

  • Caltrans Construction on I-10 and Kellogg Drive
As part of the San Bernardino Freeway (I-10) High Occupancy Vehicle Lane Project, Caltrans will be closing the on- and off-ramps at Kellogg Drive for periods of time starting later this spring and into summer and then again in the fall. Once completed, this project adds a much-needed HOV lane to I-10, helping to alleviate traffic congestion. Considering that Kellogg Drive is a major access point for our campus as well as a thoroughfare for the city of Pomona and Mt. San Antonio College, we expect that the impact on our campus will be significant. While these closures are still months away, we are working closely with Caltrans to assess …

  • World-Renowned Architect Frank Gehry Receives Neutra Award for Professional Excellence
In his six-decade career, Frank Gehry revolutionized architecture’s aesthetics and techniques and recast its relationship with cities as one of the modern era’s early advocates of design’s inherent social responsibility. For his pioneering work, the Department of Architecture honored Gehry Feb. 5 with the Richard Neutra Award for Professional Excellence in a ceremony in the J. Paul Getty Center’s Museum Lecture Hall. The hour-long program featured a live discussion with architect and Archinect senior editor Orhan Ayucce and a Q&A session with audience members. The Neutra medal recognizes the contributions that Neutra, an acclaimed modernist architect and former Cal Poly Pomona lecturer, made to architecture in the areas of research …

  • Pomona Music Students ‘Come Together’
Service-learning courses in the music department give Cal Poly Pomona students an opportunity to work with the university’s community partners such as the Pomona Unified School District. The classes also enable the students to extend the learn-by-doing approach beyond the campus boundaries. “The arts, by their nature, embrace diverse ways of knowing,” said Michael Millar, music professor. “Today’s musicians must be able to create their own audiences and community-based musical endeavors to communicate, learn, grow, and maximize their creative opportunities.” One notable service project is the partnership with the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus, which visited Pomona High School from Jan. 30 to Feb. 1. It was the bus’s third …
