Broncos Salvage Series Split With Impressive Start by Reiter and Timely Hitting
SAN MARCOS, Calif. – CPP baseball delivered one of their most complete performances of the season, securing a convincing 7-3 victory over Cal State San Marcos on Sunday afternoon at CSUSM Baseball Field. The win improves the Broncos' record to 10-23 overall and 7-17 in CCAA play, while the Cougars fall to 13-14 (8-10 CCAA).
The Broncos set the tone early in the series finale with stellar pitching and timely hitting. Starting pitcher Tyler Reiter (1-6) earned his first win as a Bronco, throwing 5.1 strong innings, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out four. The senior transfer was long overdue for his first victory of the season, as he had already delivered multiple strong starts while leading the team with 46.0 innings pitched on the season.
After two scoreless frames, Cal Poly Pomona broke through in the top of the third when Clay Porter led off with a single and came around to score on a two-out RBI single from Julian Angulo, giving the Broncos a 1-0 lead.
The momentum continued into the fourth inning when CPP tacked on three more runs. A throwing error allowed Sebastian Arguelles to reach base, and after a walk and a balk, Tyler Chaffee scored Arguelles on a sacrifice fly. Porter then tripled to right-center, bringing in Robbie Treto, and Johnny Pappas followed with an infield RBI single to extend the lead to 4-0.
Reiter held the Cougars in check, and the Broncos added two more runs in the sixth. A single to left-center by Chaffee scored Treto, followed by Porter reaching on a fielder's choice, which allowed Christian Gomez to score, pushing the lead to 6-0.
San Marcos got on the board in the bottom of the sixth, doubling in a run to make it 6-1. They inched closer in the seventh on a sacrifice fly, cutting the deficit to four.
Looking for insurance in the ninth, senior first baseman Marco Malerba delivered, singling home Beau Betten to extend the lead to 7-2. The Cougars managed one last run in the bottom of the ninth on a double, but Andrew Campbell shut the door with a solid inning of relief to seal the win. Ruben Del Castillo also threw 2.2 innings out of the pen, seeing two's across the board with two hits allowed, two walks, two strikeouts, and two earned runs.
Porter was a key offensive catalyst for the Broncos, going 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Malerba and Pappas each collected two hits and an RBI, while Chaffee drove in two runs.
