Broncos Drop Doubleheader Against Coyotes

POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader against Cal State San Bernardino, losing by scores of 15-3 and 3-0. With the losses, CPP falls to 7-13 on the season and 4-7 in conference play.

Game 1: CPP 3, CSUSB 15
Cal State San Bernardino got on the board early in the first game of the doubleheader, plating two runs in the first inning before a five-run second blew the game open. A big three-run homer to dead center capped off the big frame, putting the Broncos in a 7-0 hole.

CPP responded with a run in the bottom of the second as Beau Betten delivered an RBI single to bring home Tyler Chaffee. The Broncos added another in the third when Johnny Pappas scored on a passed ball, but that would be the extent of their offensive output until the ninth.

San Bernardino continued to apply pressure, tacking on two unearned runs in the third and delivering a six-run seventh inning to extend the lead. The Broncos struggled defensively, committing six errors that led to multiple unearned runs. Their six errors is the most in a game since 2017.

Christian Gomez provided one last spark for CPP in the ninth with an RBI single to score Clay Porter, but it was too little, too late against a dominant Yotes pitching staff.

Tyler Reiter (0-4) took the loss, allowing seven earned runs on ten hits over three innings. Chris Fields and Sean Suriyaniel made up the final 6.0 innings in relief, with Suriyaniel making his collegiate debut throwing 2.2 scoreless innings and allowing just one hit.

For the Broncos, the offense was held to just four hits, while the Yotes racked up 16. Betten led the way with two hits, while Gomez and Porter recorded the other two.

Game 2: CPP 0, CSUSB 3
The Bronco offense couldn't find its rhythm in the nightcap as the Broncos fell 3-0 to the Coyotes. Despite a strong outing from starting pitcher Dylan Esquival, the Broncos were unable to generate any run support against Yotes' Ivan Rodriguez, who threw a complete game shutout.

Esquival (1-1) turned in a solid performance, striking out six over 6.2 innings while allowing just five hits. He kept the game close, but the Yotes capitalized on key moments, breaking through in the fourth inning with two RBI singles.

The Broncos had their best scoring chance in the fourth inning when Julian Angulo doubled, but they were unable to bring him home. Brent Cota and Sebastian Arguelles also recorded hits, but Rodriguez (3-0) stifled the lineup, allowing just four baserunners while striking out seven in the complete-game shutout.

The Yotes added an insurance run in the seventh on a bases-loaded walk, extending the lead to 3-0. Aaron Rosales and Anthony Vasquez made appearances out of the pen, throwing a combined 15 pitches to get out of the seventh inning.
