By: Alex Kline, Assistant Athletics Director for Communications
NAMPA, Idaho (NCBWA) – Four Cal Poly Pomona baseball student-athletes earned All-West Region First Team honors on Wednesday morning, including Johnny Pappas, Caleb Reyes, Rhys Stevens, and Jack Sanders. Reyes and Stevens repeated as All-West Region honorees, while Pappas and Reyes were unanimous first team selections. This is the first time CPP has ever had more than two NCBWA First Team honorees in a single season.
Caleb Reyes was named CCAA Pitcher of the Year and All-CCAA First Team for the second consecutive season, after posting a 2.82 ERA in 60.2 innings during the regular season. Including the CCAA Tournament, the redshirt senior has struck out 54 batters while only walking 15, and holding opponents to a .221 average with a 1.02 WHIP. In the opening game of the CCAA Tournament last Wednesday, Reyes came one out short of a complete game, allowing zero earned runs in 8.2 innings. In two seasons with the Broncos, Reyes has an impressive 2.57 ERA across 147.0 innings with a 14-4 record and 122 strikeouts to 29 walks. He was also named to the 2024 CCAA All-Tournament Team.
Johnny Pappas leads the team with a .358 batting average and 57 runs scored on the season, while also slugging 10 home runs and 11 doubles for a 1.030 OPS. He ranks Top 10 in the CCAA in each of those categories, while leading the conference with 40 walks on the season – moving up to fourth all-time in CPP history with 101 in his career.
Jack Sanders is one of the biggest offensive threats in the conference, leading the team with 13 home runs and a 1.086 OPS, while earning CCAA Player of the Week honors twice. The junior has also been red hot as of late, hitting eight home runs in his last 15 games, and was named to the 2024 CCAA All-Tournament Team.
Rhys Stevens repeated as an All-West Region honoree, owning a 3.09 ERA on the season with 45 strikeouts in 67.0 innings. The San Clemente native was the model of consistency for the CPP staff, throwing at least 5.0 innings with three or less earned runs in seven of his 11 starts this season, including each of his last six. The redshirt junior has a .215 opponent batting average, with a WHIP of 1.19 this season and earned CCAA Pitcher of the Week in mid-April.
