By: Alex Kline (CPP) / Drew Gwerder (HUM)

POMONA, Calif. – A new tradition is set to ignite the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) sports scene as the inaugural Cal Poly Clash: Battle of the Green & Gold kicks off this October, pitting Cal Poly Humboldt against Cal Poly Pomona in an annual rivalry series. The two DII California Polytechnic universities, located at opposite ends of the state, will face off in a wide array of athletic competitions under the banner of this new rivalry.

2024-25 Rivalry Series Details
The Cal Poly Clash will be contested across 10 sports, each representing a point toward the annual title. The series includes head-to-head matchups in men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, volleyball, and cross country, with track & field and diamond sports (softball for Humboldt, baseball for Pomona) also counting toward the final tally.

Events will be streamed live on FloSports, providing fans the opportunity to watch The Clash unfold throughout the year.

Scoring Structure
There are 10 total points for each year. The school that accumulates the most points at the end of spring competition will be crowned the Cal Poly Clash champion for that year. Each sport will award 1 point, with half points given in the event of a tie. If the two schools face off in the postseason (CCAA Tournament or NCAA Tournament), those results will be included in the head-to-head record for that year.

  • Men's Basketball (1 pt) - winner of season head-to-head
  • Women's Basketball (1 pt) - winner of season head-to-head
  • Men's Soccer (1 pt) - winner of season head-to-head
  • Women's Soccer (1 pt) - winner of season head-to-head
  • Volleyball (1 pt) - winner of season head-to-head
  • Men's Cross Country (1 pt) - higher finish at CCAA Championships
  • Women's Cross Country (1 pt) - higher finish at CCAA Championships
  • Men's Track & Field (1 pt) - higher finish at CCAA Championships
  • Women's Track & Field (1 pt) - higher finish at CCAA Championships
  • Diamond Sports (Baseball/Softball) (1 pt) - higher finish in their respective CCAA standings

Since Humboldt does not have a baseball team and Pomona does not have a softball team, the two diamond sports will receive points based on which finishes higher in their respective CCAA standings. If both programs finish in the same place (e.g. 1st), then each will receive half a point.

Future of the Rivalry
The Cal Poly Clash promises to build on the rich traditions of both schools, fostering a sense of competition, pride, and community. With the first volleyball match just days away, fans and alumni are eagerly anticipating the start of what is sure to be a heated and closely watched series.
