Sydney Nelson Named CCAA Athlete of the Week

Sydney Nelson of Cal Poly Pomona has been voted the FloCollege/CCAA Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 3-9.
The reigning CCAA Freshman of the Year led the Broncos and the conference with 29.0 points per game for the week. She went 21-of-35 from the field (.600 percent) and 16-of-20 at the free throw line (.800 percent). Nelson added averages of 7.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 2.5 steals.
Nelson powered the Broncos to the win Thursday against Cal State LA, scoring 34 points, including the game-winner with 0.1 seconds on the clock by breaking through two defenders. It was a career-high night, while she shot 14-for-20 (.700) from the field, grabbed seven boards, and was the only Bronco in double digits.
The sophomore from Eastvale, Calif., followed that up with a 24-point performance against Cal State Dominguez Hills, grabbing seven more boards and going 10-for-12 from the line.
Nelson now leads the CCAA and ranks seventh in NCAA Division II with a .595 shooting percentage. She is second in the conference in scoring (16.5 ppg) and sixth in free throw percentage (.723). Click here to see the CCAA Statistics Leaders.
