New Era, Same Dream: Broncos Seek First National Title

By: Delanie Gearing, Assistant Director of Athletic Communications

POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona Broncos are on the brink of making history. For the second time in program history, they've reached the NCAA Division II National Championship match, set to face Minnesota State for the first time ever. The stage is set for a thrilling match, with both teams competing for their first national title. For the Broncos, this moment represents the pinnacle of an incredible season—and an opportunity to further cement their place in the program's rich history.

The last time the Broncos reached this point was in 1999 when they made an unforgettable run to the National Championship match. Now, 25 years later, the 2024 team is ready to write its own history, but they're not alone in the journey. The players from the class of 1999, who set the standard for the program, have been vocal in their support and pride for the current team's success.

"We are so proud of them," said Jen Mercurio-Fuller, a member of the 1999 team. "I hope they can bring home the championship and be inspirations for the next generation to follow. It was such a wonderful and exciting experience being at the national championship. It's something you remember forever. I hope they take the time to enjoy the moment."

The 1999 team laid the foundation for what Bronco soccer is today, but the 2024 team has taken the program to new heights. Both teams—separated by a quarter-century—have one thing in common: they've changed Bronco soccer forever.

Katie Kreps-Perlin, another 1999 alumna, reflected on what it meant to be part of the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer program. "Being an athlete in college teaches you so many life lessons. Being part of that team had a huge impact on me, growing up and becoming a professional, and even in my personal life. I'll never forget that experience."

This team isn't just talented on the field—they're a family. A group of strong, confident women who have each other's backs, they play not only for victory but for the love of the game. As head coach Jay Mason said to the team before the semifinal match, "You have to promise me one thing: to enjoy it and make sure all of your energy is poured into one another. Let the energy of the crowd and the moment fill you, but don't let it weigh on you." The Broncos are taking this mindset into the national final, ready to give their all and make memories that will last a lifetime.

The team's resilience and camaraderie have been crucial to their success this season, and the support from within the program has been unwavering. Ruem Malasarn, Cal Poly Pomona's Assistant Athletic Director of Sports Performance, shared his pride in the program and words of encouragement for the team. "I've been fortunate to see the incredible evolution of this team, especially this year. Please remember to enjoy this moment, but the job isn't done. Trust yourself, trust each other, and play like Champions."

The 2024 Broncos have earned the right to be here. They've fought hard all season, overcoming adversity and embracing the challenge, step by step, to reach this moment. They carry the weight of their history and the hopes of a program that has been built on resilience, teamwork, and a love of the game.

Now, it's time to make history once again. This is their moment. The National Championship is within reach, and as Coach Mason reminds them, "Enjoy it. Make it yours." The Broncos are ready to take the field and write their own chapter in history.
