Sommacal Named CCAA Track Athlete of the Week

Alessio Sommacal of Cal Poly Pomona has been named the CCAA Track Athlete of the Week for the week of April 8-14.
Sommacal became the national leader in the 400-meter hurdles when he registered a time of 50.85 at the Bryan Clay Invitational. His time earned him an NCAA provisional qualifying standard and was the second-fastest in program history. His finish was the highest of any DII athlete at the Bryan Clay Invite, as he placed fourth in the 54-person field.
The junior from Belluno, Italy, also collected an NCAA Provisional Standard in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.17. Click here to see the 2024 CCAA Performance List
This is the second CCAA Track Athlete of the Week award for Sommacal in 2024 and the seventh for Cal Poly Pomona overall. Click here to see a list of past CCAA weekly winners
Cal Poly Pomona will compete in the Mt. SAC Relays this week (Apr. 18-20) before preparing for the CCAA Championship beginning on Thursday, May 2.

- Hill Breaks School Record as Men Sweep Long Jump at CCAA ChampionshipsDarius Hill broke the Cal Poly Pomona school record in the long jump on Friday, jumping a distance of 7.64 meters to pass teammate Deandre Smith's mark last season of 7.60 meters. This mark was also good for first place in the event, making Hill the CCAA Champion. Smith and Justin Cardoza also had podium finishes in the long jump, leading to a complete sweep of the event for the Green & Gold.
- Broncos Explode for 21 Runs in San BernardinoThe Broncos split Friday's doubleheader against Cal State San Bernardino, moving to 29-19 on the season and 25-14 in CCAA play. With the two losses in the series, the Broncos are no longer able to pass Cal State San Marcos in the standings, taking them out of contention for the CCAA regular season title.
