Kalaya Buggs Earns All-America Honors
By: Alex Kline, Assistant Athletics Director for Communications
ATLANTA – Cal Poly Pomona junior Kalaya Buggs was named an All-America Honorable Mention on Thursday, it was announced by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). Buggs was one of 40 players in the country, and one of five players in the West Region, to receive All-America honors.
The Compton native was a key force in the Broncos' 20-10 season, leading them to the NCAA Tournament for the 29th time in program history. Having started in all 30 games, Buggs scored 435 total points, averaging 14.5 per game while also averaging 31.1 minutes on the court. Her 121 assists ranked fourth in the West Region, while she also led the entire region in free throws made at 158. That mark is also good for the sixth-most free throws made in a season in Cal Poly Pomona history.
She was the lone Bronco to be named All-CCAA First Team on March 5th, marking the 15th consecutive season that Cal Poly Pomona has had a member receive first team recognition. Buggs was also a two-time CCAA Player of the Week in 2024, during the weeks of Jan. 22-28 and Feb. 12-18.
Buggs becomes the 16th WBCA All-American in program history, and the first since Jada Blackwell in the 2014-15 season. Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball has earned a total of 21 All-America honors, with five athletes receiving the distinction in multiple seasons.
