Men’s Track and Field Completes Three-Peat at CCAA Championships
By: Alex Kline, Assistant Athletics Director for Communications
TURLOCK, Calif. – For the third consecutive season, the Cal Poly Pomona men's track and field team has claimed the CCAA title. They finished with 250 points, narrowly beating Chico State at 220 and dominating the remainder of the conference – third place being Cal State Los Angeles at 88 points. Across all three days, the Broncos set 23 personal records with 17 NCAA provisional qualifying marks and entering the school record book seven times.
The 250 points was the least in their three wins, and the 30-point margin of victory was closest for a CCAA Championship since UC San Diego edged out Chico State 216-213 in 2015. Justin Cardoza led the Green & Gold with 24 points, while Ryan Fields and Alessio Sommacal were tied for second with 18 points each.
Chris Bradford was named CCAA Coach of the Year, while Cardoza was named CCAA Field Athlete of the Meet after winning the triple jump and placing second in the long jump and third in the high jump.
Five Broncos earned CCAA titles over the weekend, that being Darius Hill in long jump, Cardoza in triple jump, Fields in 110m hurdles, Sommacal in 400m hurdles, and Ian Strode in pole vault. In total, CPP earned 29 All-CCAA honors.
Strode moved up to fifth all-time in the pole vault, as his new personal-best mark of 5.06m was also good for an NCAA provisional qualifier.
