No. 10 Broncos Sweep Simon Fraser
ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Broncos picked up their third sweep of the season on Friday night, defeating Simon Fraser 3-0 to improve to 5-1 to start the 2024 campaign. Cal Poly Pomona won each set in convincing fashion with set scores of 25-20, 25-16, and 25-15.
The team swung at a season-best clip of .304 in the match, notably more efficient than Simon Fraser's .080 on Friday night. Both teams had 15 attack errors, but the Broncos collected 43 kills to the Red Leaf's 22.
Sarah Ybarra once again led the squad with 13 kills, while Madison Novak and Samantha Campion were close behind with 10 and nine, respectively. Ybarra and Novak were extremely efficient in their attacks, combining for 23 kills and just three attack errors for a joint attack percentage of .488 in the match.
Caitie Mueller logged her fourth match with at least 30 assists, while also leading the team with three aces. Campion and Alexia Athans led the Broncos at the net, each recording three blocks.
Down 15-19 in the first set, the Broncos went on a surprising 10-1 run to claim the set 25-20, thanks in large part to five errors by the Red Leaf. In the second set, CPP went on a similar 11-3 run to take a 16-10 lead, which they would hang on to for the rest of the set. Multiple kills by Ybarra and back-to-back aces by Mueller would help the Broncos secure the final five points of the second set to win 25-16. Cal Poly Pomona would then close out the sweep with a 25-15 win in the third set, the final two points coming off Landen Allison-Bullock's first two career kills.
