Cal Poly Pomona Stuns No. 5 Cal State San Bernardino in CCAA Opener
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - In a thrilling upset to open the CCAA season, Cal Poly Pomona shocked No. 5 Cal State San Bernardino with a hard-fought 67-62 victory on the road. Despite trailing for most of the first half and entering the break down 32-27, the Broncos mounted a second-half comeback to seize control and secure their fifth straight road win to start the season.
The game was a back-and-forth affair, with San Bernardino holding the upper hand early. The Broncos struggled to find their rhythm in the opening 20 minutes, but their resilience paid off after halftime. Less than two minutes into the second half, Cal Poly Pomona tied the game at 34-34, setting the stage for an intense battle down the stretch.
From there, it was a tight contest for the next several minutes, with neither team able to pull away. However, the Broncos slowly began to take control midway through the second half, thanks to timely steals, solid defense, and clutch free-throw shooting. With about eight minutes remaining, Pomona started to build a lead they would never relinquish.
Demarreya Lewis-Cooper powered the Broncos' offense with a game-high 20 points, delivering crucial scores at key moments. Shyheim Parm added 14 points, making an impact on both ends of the floor, while Sam Hunter contributed 11 points.
