Hill Breaks School Record as Men Sweep Long Jump at CCAA Championships
By: Alex Kline, Assistant Athletics Director for Communications
TURLOCK, Calif. – Darius Hill broke the Cal Poly Pomona school record in the long jump on Friday, jumping a distance of 7.64 meters to pass teammate Deandre Smith's mark last season of 7.60 meters. This mark was also good for first place in the event, making Hill the CCAA Champion. Smith and Justin Cardoza also had podium finishes in the long jump, leading to a complete sweep of the event for the Green & Gold.
Gavin Hanes placed third in the decathlon, setting personal records in six of the 10 events, as well as a personal record in total points with 6,152. He finished first in both the 110m hurdles and the pole vault. Not surprisingly, Ryan Fields and Alessio Sommacal dominated the 110m hurdles, finishing first and second in the prelims. The two rank Top 15 in the nation in both the 110m hurdles and the 400m hurdles this season.
Thomas Tuff leads the Broncos with 14 points thus far, having scored eight in discus and six in shot put. The Broncos as a team remain in first place with 86 points, tying Chico State for the lead through the first seven finished events. The remaining 14 events will be completed on Saturday, setting up for an exciting finish between the two CCAA juggernauts.
