Hot Streak Continues With 71-56 Win Over Cougars
SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Broncos got revenge against Cal State San Marcos on Thursday night, after the Cougars took a game from Cal Poly Pomona back in mid-January. With the 71-56 win, the Broncos improve to 7-11 on the season and move to fifth place in the conference standings with a 6-8 CCAA record. This win also marks CPP's fifth win in their past seven games dating back to January 11th.
The Bronco's shooting has continued to improve over the past month, as their 41 percent from three and 71 percent from the free throw line on Thursday night were both their second-best marks of the season. Their nine three-point field goals made were also the third-most in a game this season.
Cal Poly Pomona controlled the pace for the first half of the game, quickly getting out to a 9-0 lead on three treys from Brandon Porter in the first two minutes. The lead would reach as high as 11 points on a Michael Ofoegbu dunk at the 17:22 mark, followed by close play between the two squads the rest of the half. The Broncos maintained a lead until the 5:43 mark, when a CSUSM three would put the Cougars within four points at 27-23.
Shockingly, the next five straight minutes of play would not see the score change, as both teams combined to go 0-for-14 from the field during this stretch. San Marcos eventually broke this run with a layup and a trey, taking their first lead of the game at 28-27 in the closing seconds of the half.
The second half was quite different, as a Bam Johnson three at the 18:44 mark would help CPP regain control of the game at 32-30. From that point forward, it was all Broncos on scoring, eventually outscoring the Cougars 44-28 in the half to bring the final score to 71-56. The Broncos also outrebounded San Marcos 45 to 36, contributing to 16 second chance points.
Porter, Johnson, and Ofoegbu all scored in double-digits. This is the fourth time in the past five games that both Ofoegbu and Porter have reached double figures. Porter leads the team in many offensive categories, including points, field goals made, three point field goals made, free throws made, and rebounds. Malachi Murrell, Chris Gayles Jr., and Jaden Winfield each contributed at least six points, while Winfield tied Porter for the most rebounds in the game at eight.
