Men’s Soccer Trio Earns All-America Honors

By: Alex Kline, Assistant Athletics Director for Communications

KANSAS CITY, Mo.Cesar Ruvalcaba, Melvyn Perez Cortez, and Paul Roger Henschke were each named a United Soccer Coaches All-American for the 2023 season, it was announced by the organization last Thursday. All three have previously earned All-America honors, making this their second time earning the distinction in each of their careers.

Ruvalcaba repeated as an All-America First Team honoree, the first time in program history that a Bronco has been named back-to-back first team. Henschke and Perez Cortez were each named Second Team, the latter also repeating with the same distinction as last season. Henschke was named a third team All-American in 2021. The trio are just the third, fourth, and fifth players in program history to earn multiple United Soccer Coaches All-America honors in their CPP career.

This is the ninth straight season that the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer program has had a United Soccer Coaches All-American, and the first time they have ever had three in one season. In fact, 10 of the 12 All-Americans in program history have come since the 2014 season, the same year the current streak started.

This season, the trio led CPP to the NCAA Tournament for the eighth consecutive season, amassing a 14-2-5 (.786) record – the third best winning percentage in program history. In the past three seasons with Ruvalcaba, Perez Cortez, and Henschke leading the team, the Broncos have racked up an impressive 39-10-15 (.727) record. All three seniors have been essential corner pieces in the sustained success since the pandemic, and cap off their Cal Poly Pomona careers with well-deserved All-America recognition.
