Women’s Cross Country Claims Pomona-Pitzer Title
By: Alex Kline, Assistant Athletics Director for Communications
CLAREMONT, CA – The women's cross country team claimed their first Pomona-Pitzer Invite title since 2019 on Saturday morning, finishing first in a field of 11 teams.
Six Broncos placed in the top 15 of the race, while four cracked the top 10. The team finished with a total time of 1:53:44.9 among their top five runners, earning 34 points to narrowly defeat The Master's, who finished in second place with 35 points. All 12 Broncos finished in the top half of the race.
"Our men and women ran well today," stated head coach Chris Bradford. "We have worked hard the past few years to build depth on the roster and that was on display today. The meet isn't as deep as it has been in the past, but we did have a strong challenge from The Master's, who is ranked #5 in NAIA on the women's side."
Alondra Arias crossed the line first for the Broncos for the third consecutive race, finishing third in a field of 122 runners with a time of 22:25.6. Angela Arellano, Vivian Martinez, and Jade Kingston all finished close behind, each making the top 10 with times under 23:00 minutes.
"We were finally able to put our full roster on the start line together for the women," added Bradford. "And it showed in our improvement, we need to continue to work on winning those individual battles throughout the race and through the finish."
Up Next
The Broncos will compete at the CCAA Championships on Saturday, October 21st, with the race beginning at 9:00 AM. The women's 6K race will be hosted by Cal State East Bay at Quarry Lakes Regional Park in Fremont, CA.
"Our plan over the next few weeks as we prepare for the CCAA Championships is to keep doing what we are doing physically," said Bradford. "We are in a good place from a fitness standpoint and our main focus will need to continue to be our mental preparation. We have some real battles ahead of us against some nationally-ranked teams. We have an opportunity to exceed expectations, but we will need to be mentally ready for a very challenging race."
