Arias Runs Second-Fastest Regional Time in Program History While Broncos Place 6th at NCAA West Regionals
By: Alex Kline, Assistant Athletics Director for Communications
MONMOUTH, OR – Alondra Arias shined in the NCAA West Regionals on Saturday morning, placing 13th in a field of 164. Her time of 21:21.1 was not only a personal best, but is tied with Araseli Servin (2019) for the second-fastest time in a six-kilometer regional championship meet, and also ranks tied for seventh in school history in 6K races. The fastest time at a NCAA West Regional race was set by Luz Garcia, also set in 2019, who finished in 21:08.8 on the same course, Ash Creek Preserve.
Arias' Top 25 finish was enough to earn USTFCCCA All-West Region honors. Her 13th place finish was also the third-highest among CCAA runners in the race.
The Broncos, who had been ranked #10 in the latest USTFCCCA West Region poll, finished in sixth place out of the 24 teams with 182 points, averaging 22:02 with a spread of 1:08 between their top five runners. This is the fifth time in the past seven seasons that the Broncos have finished in the top six of the West Regionals, each race including at least 24 teams.
Sophomore Vivian Martinez narrowly missed making the All-West Region team, placing 28th with a time of 21:51.8. That marks her second-fastest time in a 6K race over the past two seasons and shaved off 41 seconds from her performance at the West Regionals in Billings, MT last year. Angela Arellano (22:01.1), Lauren Jauregui (22:28.6), and Jade Kingston (22:29.8) all crossed the line shortly after Martinez, each placing in the Top 60 of the race.
Western Washington, who had been ranked #1 in the region, appropriately claimed the West Region title with 75 points, averaging 21:25 in the race with a spread of 0:50 between their top five runners. Western Washington, Biola, and Chico State each earned an automatic qualification to the National Championships by finishing top three in the race.
