By: Delanie Gearing, Assistant Director of Athletic Communications
POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona Men's Track & Field team has been ranked first in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Preseason Poll, setting the stage for an exciting upcoming season. In his eighth year leading the team, Head Coach Chris Bradford is optimistic about the promising future of his squad. "This should be a really fun year with this group," said Bradford. "We have worked hard this fall teaching our newcomers the culture we have built, and we have a really strong group of returners who are looking to continue the success of the past three seasons."
The Broncos are entering the 2025 season with a wealth of talent, including several athletes to watch who have already made a mark at the national level. Alessio Sommacal, who took second in the 110-meter hurdles and 4x400-meter relay and first in the 400-meter hurdles at the 2024 CCAA Championship, is one of the key athletes to look out for this season. Justin Cardoza, who placed third in the high jump, second in the long jump, and first in the triple jump at the 2024 CCAA Championship, is another standout. Lorenzo Boyd, who earned second place in the 100-meter dash, third in the 200-meter dash, and second in the 4x100-meter relay at the same championship, adds further strength to the team. All three athletes bring valuable NCAA Division II Championship experience, a key asset for the Broncos.
In addition to Sommacal, Cardoza, and Boyd, the team boasts other athletes with NCAA Championship experience, such as Nnamdi Onwaeze, Colin Quinn, Darius Hill, and Deandre Smith, further deepening the Broncos' talent pool. Bradford has already led the team to three consecutive CCAA Championships in 2022, 2023, and 2024, and the program showed remarkable progress last season, with five Cal Poly Pomona program records being broken and 21 athletes entering the top 10 in program history. With a mix of seasoned veterans and talented newcomers, the Broncos are poised for another successful season.
